after many days of exploring 'lowlands' we finally arrived to a hilly area, mountainous even - kerry.
it was really nice to drive the ring of kerry but we were eager to climb a mountain. for this we chose carrauntoohil- the highest mountain in ireland.
we've done some research and lots of reading and decided to tackle it via devils ladder and then come back down via brother o'shea path.
and a little word about the mountain itself: i would say it's a similar experience to scottish highlands. a long-ish approach with great views around then the ascent- devils ladder. i read some scary stories about it (and carrauntoohil in general, as in 'people dont come back from there) but to be honest it's just a scree gully. not scary, not tricky and reasonably easy to follow. there is a zig-zaging path and it is a good one. then from the beleach to the top of carrauntoohil there are dozens of paths, all probably the same quality so it doesnt really matter which one you choose. the summit-oh bhoy, some really nice views from there :)
descent- there are many options, you can either re-trace your steps (but that's boring!) or you can choose one of many paths in all directions really, depends where you'd like to end up :)
we zig-zaged down steep scree path towards west, just over the cliff and then down via brother o'shea path.
couple of words about this route- at the beginning it's steep, but there is a path and it's easy to follow. then there is a little green-watered lake where we had a break. from there it gets a little bit more tricky. there is a path, but it comes and goes and we somehow lost it and it was quite difficult to see where to go as there are some cliffs and crags and it's quite important to start climbing down in a right place. we decided to keep right and it was a good decision as there was kinda path just at the base of the rock wall. after passing the craggy/cliffy part it was all ok again and easy to follow.
as you can see -we were blessed with nice warm weather, i guess all this would be much more difficult in rain, low clouds or mist. so don't under estimate this mountain (any mountain actually) and if unsure or lack of confidence just stay safe.
we started from cronins yard (parking charge 2eur but there is nobody to control it, you 'donate' at the cafe, but don't receive any receipt so they can't prove whether you paid or not), there is another starting point nearby- Lisleibane.

kilka slow o okolicy: doswiadczenie jest podobne jak w szkockich gorach. dlugawe podejscie z wielkimi przestrzeniami i boskimi widokami, potem podejscie czyli diabelska drabina. naczytalam sie o niej strasznych rzeczy (i ogolnie o carrauntoohil) ale ostatecznie to jest po prostu kamienisty zleb z luznymi skalkami. niezbyt niebezpieczny i prawde mowiac latwy do wejscia. po prostu trzeba byc ostroznym, jak zawsze w gorach.
potem jestesmy na przeleczy i mamy przed soba wiele sciezuni wiodacych na sam szczyt. wszystkie one sa pewnie podobne wiec wybralysmy po prostu jedna z nich, ot tak. szczyt- kurcze ale widoki!
zejscie - kilka opcji, w zaleznosci gdzie sie chce zejsc. mozna wrocic ta sama droga (ale to nudne nie?) albo, tak jak my, pojsc nieco na zachod i zaczac schodzic kamienista zygzakowata sciezka ponad urwiskiem. potem skrecic w prawo, na sciezka brata o'shea. na poczatku jest stromo, ale sciezka szybko 'sprowadza' nas a nizsze tereny, najpierw do malego zielonego jeziorka. fajne miejsce na mala przerwe :) potem sciezka nieco sie gubi. i tu wlasnie wazne jest zeby miec oczy otwarte jako ze przez nami jest kilka malych urwisk i trzeba przez nie przebrnac z glowa. najlepiej trzymac sie prawej strony, jest tam mala sciezynka zaraz pod sciana skalna. jak juz minie sie te urwiska to sciezka znow sie wyrownuje i niebawem jestesmy juz na dole :)
jak widac na zdjeciach- bogowie pogody byli po naszej stronie wiec bylo latwo, ale domyslam sie ze w deszczu, niskich chmurach i mgle cale doswiadczenie nabiera nowego wymiaru i moze byc naprawde niebezpieczne. wiec nie ma co byc kozakiem, jesli brak nam doswiadczenia czy pewnosci siebie lepiej poczekac na ladniejszy dzien lub skorzystac z uslug przewodnika
